This job market isn’t getting any less competitive. So if you want a security guard job it’s important to make yourself look as attractive as possible.
Did you know that 80% of employers Google a candidate before calling them in for an interview? The way that you present yourself online could make all the difference in your job search.
You might be surprised to learn that there’s much information about you online at all. But almost everyone leaves some sort of “online footprint” simply by participating in normal internet activities. And even if you are one of the few who has not left such a footprint, you can’t relax. Having no online presence is almost as bad as having a negative online presence.
What are you looking for?
When you Google yourself you need to pay attention to anything which could paint you in a negative light. This could include inflammatory blog comments that you left under your own name, a photo of yourself that features drugs or alcohol, or any other piece of information which might make employers question your judgment.
What if you find something bad?
If you find something bad you’ll have to deal with it in one of two ways. You’ll either have to ask the owner of the site to remove the content or you will have to find a way to push that content down in the search engines by placing lots of high quality content of your own.
What if you have a really common name?
It’s hard to accurately Google someone named John Smith. This probably protects you from any problems that you might have with negative content, but it does not relieve you of the need to build some positive content. At the very least you should have a LinkedIn profile that you can add to your resume to reassure employers that you use the Internet responsible.
How else can I build a positive presence?
You could start a blog or a Twitter account. It doesn’t much matter what you talk about, so long as you avoid talking about drugs, touchy subjects like politics, or your latest profanity-laden rant. A positive blog about your love of cross-country biking is just fine.
Remember, employers want to hire security guards who demonstrate good character. They use the internet to help them eliminate the need to guess whether or not you are trustworthy. Make sure your web presence reflects your honor, good sense, and trustworthiness. You might just land that job faster than you think!
